Character Sheet
Personality: Since he was a young boy, Magnus Burnsides has been a protector. He takes protecting people very seriously, often being willing to take the “big hit” to protect the people that he loves. He lives his life by the idea that he needs to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
Magnus has a real big heart. He cares deeply for those he considers his family and will do whatever it takes to make sure that they are safe. He’s also a giant goofball, cracking jokes and doing just generally dumb and silly stuff even during serious missions for the Bureau of Balance. Sure, he cares about the mission and saving the world (since saving the world does help protect people he loves and also, he lives there), but that doesn’t mean he can’t relentlessly make fun of a train car worker (and when we find out that train car worker was really the baddie of the arc, it just means he deserved the taunts even more).
“Magnus rushes in” is another thing that greatly defines Magnus’ personality. He’s a fighter, not a thinker. He often rushes into situations and battles without stopping for a moment to create a plan of attack. He’s a very spur of the moment kind of guy (for example, deciding to eat the Philosopher’s Stone, one of the magical relics they are trying to gather, to safely stow it until they get back to headquarters. It had to come out somehow…). And much to the chagrin of his teammates, he often rushes into fights axe first without any idea how they’re going to win the fight (which, to be fair to Magnus, ends up working out most of the time).
Though Magnus sometimes can be compared to being a puppy in a large man’s body, he’s not always a ray of sunshine. Though his jerkish moments are not as bad as one of his teammates (…Taaako), there are times where he acts like a big ol’ dick for no reason (though, a good chuck of the time it’s played for laughs). Along with this, though he doesn’t remember it anymore due to canon point, he has a long running hatred of a man named Governor Kalen. Kalen was the one who murdered his wife and father-in-law, along with many others in the town of Raven’s Roost. Magnus had a desire for revenge that he traded away in Wonderland back home (he no longer can remember the man, though he remembers what happened still). Though he did make sure to pass along the revenge quest to Taako and Merle.
Overall, Magnus is a good person. He’s (usually) willing to do what’s right and protect those around him from harm. He can be goofy and reckless at times, but he has a good heart and always tries to do the right thing at the end (even if he has to do some bad stuff along the way to get to the right thing). He knows he’s not perfect, but he always does his best and strives to improve himself when he can.
Inventory: There are…so many things Magnus has. Hopefully a link to his current items page on his wiki will work well enough.
Abilities: Magnus is a level 10 fighter and a level 2 rouge, which means he’s excellent at hitting things (and hitting them multiple times in one attack) and okay at thief stuff like lock picking and being sneaky (to be fair, he’s still learning). He is proficient in all types of armor, shields and weapons (though his main weapons are an axe and a lance). He also has vehicle proficiency (though only for land vehicles) and animal handling proficiency. He knows three languages: common, elvish and thieves’ cant. Magnus also has what he calls “rustic hospitality”, which honestly in canon has mostly just meant he’s “rustically hospitable” and has a sort of charm about him that (sometimes) gets the common folk to be on his side.
Flaws: “Magnus rushes in” is a phrase that is used many, many times over the course of the podcast. While it can be a good thing sometimes, most of the time it results in Magnus doing stupid and reckless things that don’t always work in his favor. He tends to act before he thinks, which often gets him in trouble (and has gotten a few people hurt or killed along the way). And while protecting people is a noble trait that he has, on the other hand he’s willing to put himself into dangerous and harmful situations if he thinks it might help someone.
Magnus technically is specified as “lawful good”, though he doesn’t always stick to the lawful part of that good. While he does try to do the right thing and protect those around him, he’s also quick to fight and kill when he needs to (he once chopped a dude in half and only after the fact realized it probably wasn’t a good choice…and then he chucked the body off a cliff). He has no qualms with killing or doing any illegal activities (attempting to steal from a bank while also trying to help catch the bank robber, breaking into the Bureau of Balance jail against strict orders from the Director, killing a bunch of gang members after a police officer explicitly told them not to kill anyone, etc). Also, he can be kind of an asshole at times (for example, being mean to Angus and bullying him every time he sees the boy, even if it is out of love). Though his asshole tendencies are less extreme than those of Taako, he still has his moments of being a huge jerk.
